Our take
DocSend, founded in the United States in 2013, is a document sharing and tracking tool best known among startups for sending pitch decks. It scores 7.0 overall in our table, the lowest of the providers we score for the UK. That is not a judgement on how well it does its own job. Its ease of use score of 9.0 is among the highest in our line-up; it ranks last because our criteria are built around full transactions, where its deal tools score 6.0 and security 6.8.
The useful question for a UK founder is not whether DocSend is a good data room, but at which point in a raise it stops being enough.

The outreach stage
Before a term sheet, a founder’s main job is getting the right investors to read the deck. DocSend is designed for that stage. Our data lists dynamic watermarks, a full audit trail and e-signature, and its focus on document tracking means you can see which investors opened the deck you sent. For a seed or pre-seed round, that is often the most useful information you have: it tells you who to follow up with and who has quietly moved on.
Watermarking matters more than it might seem. Decks get forwarded between investors, sometimes helpfully, sometimes to a competitor’s backer. A name stamped on each view discourages that.
When diligence starts
Once an investor issues a term sheet, the document set changes. Their solicitors will ask for the articles, the shareholders’ agreement, the cap table, board minutes, employment contracts, IP assignments and, for a UK raise, any SEIS or EIS advance assurance correspondence with HMRC. That is dozens or hundreds of files, much of it containing personal data.
At this point DocSend’s gaps start to matter. There is no bulk upload in our data, which makes loading a full folder structure slow. There is no structured Q&A for the lead investor’s enquiries. There is no document rights control, so downloaded files stay downloaded. And there is no two-factor login or SSO, which is a weak point for a folder holding employee contracts and home addresses.
For a priced round led by a fund, our SEIS and EIS fundraising page sets out what a typical UK diligence pack holds and which room features help.
Data protection
DocSend lists SOC 2 and GDPR in its credentials and does not hold ISO 27001 in our data. A pitch deck usually holds little personal data, so the UK GDPR exposure at the outreach stage is modest. That changes when you upload contracts of employment, option agreements or a shareholder register with home addresses. Before you do, ask for the hosting region and the data processing terms, and consider whether the lack of two-factor login is acceptable to you as controller. Our guide to UK GDPR in a due diligence data room covers what to minimise.
Per-user pricing in pounds
DocSend prices per user, from $45/user/mo, approx. £34 per user at our rate. For a solo founder that is a modest monthly cost; for a team of three or four sharing an account, it climbs quickly. Confirm the plan, check what each tier includes and whether VAT is added. Our data room costs page compares per-user plans with flat monthly ones.
Comparisons
Ellty is a full data room with structured Q&A, document rights control, two-factor login, bulk upload, e-signature and AI tools, with a flat published price from $149/mo (approx. £112) rather than a per-user fee. Digify is closer to DocSend in focus but adds document rights control and bulk upload.

Questions people ask
Is DocSend a data room?
It is a document sharing and tracking tool with some data room features, such as watermarks and an audit trail. It lacks structured Q&A, bulk upload and two-factor login in our data, so it is better suited to early outreach than full diligence.
How much does DocSend cost in pounds?
From $45/user/mo, approx. £34 per user at our rate. Confirm the plan and VAT with DocSend.
Should a UK founder use DocSend for an SEIS round?
It works well for sending the deck to prospective investors. When a lead investor starts legal diligence, a room with Q&A, bulk upload and stronger access controls is usually a better home for the full pack.
Is DocSend ISO 27001 certified?
Not according to our data. It lists SOC 2 and GDPR.
